Baby Earth
A creation poem.
A long time ago, The Moon met the Sun And a long time they spent together, Until Moon began to grow Something that would be birthed To become someone Named Earth Maybe they’re still in love, the Moon and the Sun Maybe they’re not, it can be hard to tell I’ve heard before that though they still loved each other, To maintain balance so Baby Earth’s journey could go on, They had to cast a spell: When one of us appears, The other will be on our way out Though it may be hard on our hearts, We make this decision to stay apart– So Earth shall reap in our balance Between light and dark She will create days and seasons; Her cycles that give life and reason To nourish her own children And though we will be apart, our love, Through our dance together, Will deepen Grandmother Moon stays tethered to Earth Waxing and waning her phases in motion As she guides the tides and oceans She teaches her lessons of release Of each moment’s impermanence And how change is imminent Despite her ever-changing phases, There is security and power In relying upon A cycle’s many stages Grandfather Sun sits farther beyond, A static, unstoppable life force Whose absence is always noticed But never feared For when he is gone, It is trusted, it is known, that He will be soon be back To give warmth to skin and soil To provide light to move through the days Grandfather Sun; Who we would freeze And fall forever without Through a love humble and unconditional, Grandparents Sun and Moon have raised their Baby Earth To become our Mother Earth Quenched with the water Of the Moon’s cleansing tides, And sprung with buds of new, green lives Of the Sun’s rays of light, Earth passes these lessons Through her saturated soil To us here; Two-legged, four-legged, Rooted underground or suspended in air Maybe all this is why I find it so beautiful To see Grandma Moon in the daytime sky lit by Grandpa Sun, Or why some of the truest, most Earthly moments Happen in the peaceful exchange of Sunrise and sunset, Or why there is so much power in eclipses. Because during these moments, Our Earthly lineage Has aligned and made itself known Like tracing back ancestry To a place that has always Felt like home
